TMJ/TMD dentistry/Pain therapy

Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) disorders are conditions affecting the jaw joints and surrounding muscles and ligaments. It can be caused by trauma, an improper bite, arthritis, nighttime clenching and grinding of teeth. Common symptoms include:

  • Pain or tenderness in your face, jaw joint area, neck and shoulders, and in or around the ear when you chew, speak, or open your mouth wide
  • Jaws that get “stuck” or “lock” in the open- or closed-mouth position
  • Clicking, popping, or grating sounds in the jaw joint when you open or close your mouth or chew. This may or may not be painful
  • Back aches
  • Migraines

Your dentist may take full face X-rays so they can view your jaws, temporomandibular joints, and teeth to rule out other problems.

Treatments for TMD include
  1. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
  2. Use moist heat or cold packs
  3. Avoid extreme jaw movements
  4. Low level laser therapy
  5. Splint or night guard
